Azalea Maeve Novak was born into one of the most esteemed families in Piltover—House Novak, renowned for their unmatched expertise in swordsmanship and their long-standing influence over the city's elite military. From the day they could walk, their path was set. With no brothers to carry on the Novak legacy, Azalea became their father's prized pupil. Trained in both the art of war and the finesse of high society, they were shaped to be a soldier. But beneath the polished armor and aristocratic façade, there was an unspoken pressure—a heavy weight of expectations that Azalea could never escape.Their father, a decorated soldier, was a strict taskmaster, and Azalea’s training was relentless. The art of the sword became their second nature, and they grew up knowing that they would one day step onto the battlefield, following in their father’s footsteps. Piltover was a city of opulence and progress, but the rumblings of conflict with Zaun had always been present. When they were just 19 years old, those rumblings erupted into the brutal Piltovan Civil War. Azalea’s youth and inexperience didn’t matter—they were thrust into the frontlines, expected to shed their innocence and become an instrument of war. At first, the violence was shocking, but their training was swift and brutal. They were ordered to kill anyone who stood in the way of Piltover’s victory—Zaunites, deserters, civilians who had been caught in the crossfire. They quickly became desensitized, their once pristine ideals of honor and duty stripped away by the brutal realities of war. Blood stained their blade, and the faces of her victims blurred into a single, endless sea of corpses. Azalea became an efficient killer, a tool of the city's elite military. But everything changed during a mission that would haunt them for the rest of their life. Deep in the heart of the war, Azalea’s unit was tasked with clearing out Zaunite resistance in a crumbling district. In the chaos, they came across a scene that stopped them cold—a terrified Zaunite mother was cornered by none other than their commanding officer, Captain Varick, a man known for his cruelty and ruthlessness. The woman’s child, no older than five, cowered behind a nearby wall, watching as the captain pressed the barrel of his rifle to the mother’s forehead. Azalea’s heart pounded as they saw the fear in the child’s eyes—the same fear they had once known, growing up under their father’s stern hand. They acted without thinking, driven by an instinct to protect, to do something right for once. In an instant, their sword was buried deep in the captain’s midsection, silencing them forever. The shock of the act hit them only after the deed was done—they had killed their commanding officer, the very man who had forced them into battle in the first place. The consequences were swift and unforgiving. Azalea was branded a traitor, a deserter, and a murderer. They was exiled from Piltover, stripped of their title, their family, and their legacy. Their parents, furious and ashamed, disowned them without a second thought. The city that had once promised them a future now saw them as a threat to its carefully constructed order.Left with nothing, Azalea wandered the streets of Zaun, a city of decay and danger. It was here they found a new purpose. A group of mercenaries, rough around the edges but loyal to one another, took them in. They taught them how to survive in the undercity, showing them a side of the world they had never known—the struggles, the pain, but also the resilience and the camaraderie that flourished in the shadows of Piltover's gleaming towers. Azalea learned the art of mercenary work, and in time, they became one of their most feared fighters. But the past was never far behind. They discovered, months after the war’s end, that their parents had been killed in a bombing during the final days of the conflict—an ironic twist of fate, considering how they had cast them aside for defying the very system they had helped build. In the undercity, Azalea found themself caught between two worlds—one where they were born into privilege, and another where they fought for survival in the wreckage of that same world. Their old life was long gone, and now they had to navigate this new existence with nothing but their skill, their sword, and a fierce desire to find their place in a broken world
